Government ordered to renovate Liaqat Bagh for Recreational Activities

Parks and recreational spots play a significant role in improving the quality of life and developing a sense of community. They are vitally important to establishing and maintaining the quality of life in a community, ensuring the health of families and youth, and contributing to the economic and environmental well-being of a community and a region. Projects like constructing or renovating parks generate financial returns which are often greater than the money invested into the project. Such projects also positively impact the real estate market as home buyers prefer homes close to parks, open space, and greenery which exacerbate the land value thereby increasing property tax revenue.

Liaquat Bagh is one of the oldest parks established during the British Raj in the subcontinent. Spanning over 30 acres, the park gained its post-independence historic significance, and its current name, after the assassination of Pakistan’s first prime minister, Liaquat Ali Khan in1951. After that tragedy, a hall was built in the park ground in his memory. The park also has a sports complex which attracts people interested in recreational activities and sports. It is one of the oldest sports complexes in the garrison city which was built according to international standards in 1984 and is used for district and divisional level sporting activities.

Recently, the government has ordered the renovation of Liaquat Bagh by utilising all the available resources and asked the authorities to complete it in a short period of time. The project aims to promote recreational activities in the city. The civil work for the beautification of the park includes renovation of the platform of the park by using Chakwal stone, repainting the boundary wall, and connecting the adjoining mosque to the park. Also, a monument will be built in the memory of Pakistan’s former Prime Minister, Benazir Bhutto, who was assassinated near the park 15 years ago. The government has also ordered the authorities to build a memorial library in the park.
