The Karakoram Highway Phase-II (Havelian-Thakot) project is an important road link under the China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). The project won the best bridge award at the 9th annual engineering News-Record (ENR)’s Global Best Projects competition for its outstanding design and quality construction. NESPAK undertook the motorway construction as a joint venture with the leading Turkish consultancy firm M/S Dolsar.

The construction was complete in February 2020 for Rs 134 billion. Its design was a challenge for construction companies as it included the construction of 100 bridges and 6 tunnels spread over the length of 8.6 km. The design review of the proposed project included extensive hydrological studies, structural evaluations, geotechnical review of deep cuts, and the subsoil data of over 2000 piles.

In addition, timely quality assurance at the site location was a challenge as well. For the successful implementation of the project, NESPAK deployed around 40+ workers during the construction phase. The local challenge was to restore cross connectivity of villages and communities whose communication lines were cut off from the network. NESPAK as a construction consultant arranged for the required measures to help the local communities get on board.
