Recently, the government of Sindh discovered 3 billion tons of coal deposits in the Thar region. According to estimates, these coal reserves are expected to be one of the largest in the country, worth 5 billion barrels of crude oil. The coal was discovered by the Chinese firm working under the Thar Coal Block-I of the China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). The workers discovered the coal when the mining and drill work penetrated 145 meters deep into the ground.

Several government officials lauded the discovery and hoped that this would massively turn around the fortune of Pakistan, particularly Sindh. According to the energy minister of Sindh, the discovery of coal deposits will increase the annual production of coal to 9 billion tons, adding that the development would address energy issues in the region besides generating billions in revenues.

Previously, the National Transmission and Despatch Company (NTDC) shared plans to procure disc insulator and hardware string to Matiari double-circuit transmission line for the supply of power from 1,320-megawatt SECL Coal Power Plant.
