On Monday, Facebook, Whatsapp and Instagram suffered a global outage for six hours, preventing its 3.5 billion users from accessing the different social media platforms. According to Facebook, a faulty configuration change was the primary source of this outage. However, it did not specify who was responsible for this configuration.

Anonymous employees of Facebook claim that the outage was an internal mistake while routing internet traffic to its systems. The error was aggravated as the failure of the internal communication tools and other resources were dependent on the same network. In addition, security experts believe that the outage could be an unintentional mistake or sabotage by an insider. The recent Facebook outage was the largest ever tracked by the web monitoring group down-detector. A statement from Facebook Chief Technology Officer Mike Schroepfer came on Twitter, apologizing to every small and large business, family and individual affected by the outage.

According to experts from Harvard’s Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society director, Facebook locked its car keys in its car for a while. Facebook authorities have not put forward a detailed explanation related to the cause of the outage yet, which led to plummeting shares of the largest social media company in the world.
