Recently, President Dr Arif Alvi announced that Pakistan’s presidential secretariat is the first green secretariat in the world as it was awarded the international certification of ISO 50001 EnMS. According to sources from the presidency, the building of the secretariat successfully curtailed over 35% of its energy costs and requirements, saving Rs 72.5 million for the public exchequer.
The Green Presidency Initiative is in line with the government’s larger goal to curtail energy consumption in public sector buildings and shift to renewable sources of energy. During his address, the president stated the extensive monetary benefits of energy conservation. According to estimates, energy conservation efforts can save up to 3,154,750 kWh of energy. This also implies that the system can reduce 3.144 tons of greenhouse gases that would otherwise require 142,909 trees for its eradication.
President of Pakistan, Dr Arif Alvi supported the initiative and lauded the private sector for taking up the green building initiative under the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) ambit.
