A Washington-based international freedom advocacy group and research organization released its Freedom on The Net Report, 2021. It ranks countries based on the freedom provided by different governments to their citizens on the internet. Freedom on the Internet as a term refers to the citizens’ cyber freedom and protection from abusers online.

According to its latest report, Pakistan ranked amongst the top 10 countries in the world, where internet freedom has been on the decline. It highlighted the different rules and regulations which impede cyber liberty in Pakistan. The country was also ranked seventh-worst amongst the abusers of internet freedom.

The report uses indicators like data sovereignty to measure the strength of freedom on the internet. According to the report, in Pakistan and several other countries, the government is using mass surveillance as an excuse to violate data sovereignty. It also highlights several government regulations that limit internet freedom in Pakistan.
