Renewable energy sources are an important step towards creating a carbon-free and climate-friendly economy. Despite Pakistan’s negligible contribution to the environmental crisis, it falls in the 5th most vulnerable region to be affected by climate change. Hence, it is imperative that the country shifts its energy from non-renewable to renewable energy sources.

LUMS institute of energy has gathered insights on the use of different energy sources, renewable and non-renewable to analyze the trends which dominate Pakistan’s energy landscape. According to the research, hydropower tends to be the largest source of energy followed by gas and coal. The use of hydropower in the country can be justified because of the abundance of rivers and other water bodies in the country. However, alternatives like solar and wind energy are also needed to replace unsustainable sources like coal, gas and oil.

Currently, Pakistan derives 46% of the country’s energy from burning fossil fuels. This needs to be reduced as the climate-conscious global economy is becoming more concerned about the type of energy used to run industries and other systems.

Pakistan has a huge solar and wind power potential that can replace fossil fuel consumption. By decarbonizing its energy sector the country can shift to renewable sources of energy and reduce its climate risk.
