The government plans to diversify and expand its air travel by making small airports functional in different country areas. Several small airports remain dormant because of the non-availability of commercial flights. In a recent cabinet meeting, it was announced that work would start soon on airports on commercially viable air routes.
The air transport industry is estimated to contribute 2 billion USD towards national GDP, making it an important part of the overall logistics-based economy. State-air carrier Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has a monopoly on the national airline industry; however, the country lacks domestic airlines that can increase the mobility of men and materials.
Recently, the federal cabinet approved the license to a Pakistani private airline named Q-Airways, which will operate flights between Karachi, Islamabad, and Lahore. The airline will commence its domestic routes within three to four months.
