The Government has approved two major projects worth Rs191.722 billion in the field of health and housing projects. These projects include the Greater Karachi Bulk Water Supply Scheme K-IV and the establishment of blood transfusion services.

The water supply scheme is related to the housing project under which 650 million gallons per day of water will be supplied to the locals at a cost of about Rs191.194 billion. The establishment of blood transfusion services will provide safe blood to the blood banks. The estimated cost of this project is Rs528.383 billion.

In Pakistan, the water supply is limited and unsafe for drinking purposes due to ineffectual management. Growing population, urbanization, unbalanced access and distribution progressive industrialisation, and unavailability of storage capacity make water management a difficult task.

Health presents challenges for a country as according to a World Bank report, 50% of economic growth differentials are attributed to poor health and low life expectancy. Effective public health systems are important for providing measures that promote wellness and prevent diseases.

The health and housing issues are considered contributors to economic growth. The incumbent Government is making efforts to solve the substandard housing problems including the issue of water supply and health problems. These approved projects will resolve the issue of severe water shortage in Karachi and will increase voluntary non-remunerated blood donation and ensure the rational use of blood products.
