Through a unanimous National Assembly Resolution, Pakistan has adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development as its national development plan. The government has made considerable progress by incorporating these goals into national policies and strategies. The seven pillars of Vision-2025 are fully aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to provide a comprehensive long-term strategy for achieving inclusive growth. However, some key initiatives are recently undertaken to achieve the goals and efforts made to ensure sustainability, including the Mera Pakistan Mera Ghar scheme to provide shelter to the underprivileged segment while stimulating the economy. Also, Ehsaas, the national poverty alleviation programme, the Sehat Sahulat programme, and the Equality policy to address the gender gap in financial inclusion has been introduced.

According to the State Bank of Pakistan, Pakistan is one of the first few countries to adopt the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as part of its national development plan. In addition, national and provincial assemblies have also established SDG task forces to oversee progress on the goals.

The overall target of the government’s efforts is to improve the people’s living standards and lift at least half of all impoverished persons out of poverty. The government has taken significant steps toward fostering human development, improving public service delivery, removing regional disparities in infrastructure development, and reviving the economy to achieve SDG targets. The current government has made significant progress in minimising its carbon footprint by implementing the Billion Trees Tsunami project, which aims to extend its forest cover and safeguard the environment. However, the government still needs institutionalising and deepening reforms to advance the efforts to meet the SDGs to make the country a better place for generations to come.
