The Government has decided to start expansion work on Islamabad Expressway. The main thoroughfare will be expanded from Koran Bridge to G.T. Road, and the work will be completed in two phases. In the first phase, a 2 km road from Korang Bridge will be completed, and a long 7 km road will be constructed to G.T. road in the second phase. The estimated cost of the project is about Rs2 billion.

The expressway is among the busiest roads in Islamabad that carries the city’s huge traffic for the past few years. However, the four-lane highway transformed into a two-lane road at Korang Bridge created massive traffic congestion. The slow-moving trucks and high traffic levels on the road have increased the gridlock. Nonetheless, the expansion of the Expressway will reduce traffic congestion, fuel consumption, air pollution and create sufficient livability, job opportunities, and other industrial facilities in the surrounding areas.

The present government is focusing on infrastructure development projects to improve the livability of cities and boost economic and trade activities in the region. The transportation sector contributes a share of 10.5% to the country’s GDP. Increased spending by the government on public infrastructure has positively affected social and human capital. The Expressway expansion project will positively impact the real estate sector as connectivity and mobility to and from these areas will improve, increasing the demand for housing societies and properties in nearby places.
