The emissions profile of Pakistan is lopsided with the agriculture and energy industry contributing the largest share in greenhouse gas emissions. From 1994 till 2015, Pakistan’s carbon emissions have increased by 123%. Moreover, these emissions are expected to increase by about 300% by 2030.

Pakistan has the potential to reduce its carbon emissions up to 20% by decarbonizing its transport and agricultural sector, closely followed by its manufacturing industries. By employing smart and environmentally compatible technologies in the agricultural sector, Pakistan can efficiently reduce its carbon emissions profile.

Reducing carbon emissions was the center of discussion this World Environment Day, with the theme of ecosystem restoration. Ecosystems can be effectively restored if policymakers focus on increasing tree cover, cutting down on carbon emissions, and setting up a socio-economic system that promotes effective green recovery of a post-pandemic world.
