The National Database & Registration Authority (NADRA) has launched a contactless biometric verification service for the banking and payments industry. The launch of this service can make Pakistan one of the few countries to implement contactless biometric verification technology on a national scale.

The contactless verification will use an application on a smartphone that will capture and verify the biometrics of the potential account holder. Currently, the State Bank of Pakistan will run a pilot project under which five particular banks will use the technology to check its reliability and long term prospects. If successful, the SBP will extend this technology to the rest of the SBP-licensed EMIs and banks across the countries. Thus, the integration of remote biometric capturing technology can transform the digital banking system of Pakistan.
