To make the verification system of Computerized National Identity Cards (CNICs) more transparent, the National Database & Registration Authority (NADRA) has launched an online system for the verification of family tree and renewal of CNICs. The new online system will allow the citizens to receive and verify the details of their family members through SMS on their cell phones.

NADRA also launched an awareness campaign called “Your family is safe, Pakistan is safe”. The campaign encourages Pakistani citizens to unregister cell phone numbers not in use, keenly verify if any stranger is registered in their family tree with the NADRA database.

The online verification system will also help authorities in checking foreigners illegally living in Pakistan. According to several security institutions reporting to NADRA, foreigners who are illegally residing in Pakistan have access to CNICs. The online verification system will help increase transparency and highlight the status of illegal citizens in the country. Moreover, the use of innovative technologies like Artificial Intelligence will help make a NADRA database with minimum errors or false entries to detect fake identity cards.
