According to a report revealed by the GSMA, Pakistan remains on the lowest end in terms of smartphone users and 5G coverage among the selected countries of the Asia Pacific region. The report titled “The Mobile Economy of Asia Pacific, 2021” has highlighted the status of 5G coverage of the region.

The report shows that South Korea was the first country in the Asia Pacific to roll out a 5G network in 2018, followed by Australia, Singapore, Maldives, and New Zealand in 2019. In 2020, several other countries rolled out 5G including Guam, Japan, Laos, Northern Mariana Islands, Philippines, Indonesia, and Thailand. The report predicts that Pakistan will not be able to reach the 80% benchmark of providing 5G network coverage under the stipulated period.

According to Minister for Information Technology and Telecommunication, Syed Amin Ul Haq, the government of Pakistan has taken several initiatives that will help the country surpass the projections made by the GSMA. This includes the Digital Pakistan initiative that aims to digitize all possible socio-economic sectors.
