Pakistan’s National Security Committee has approved the country’s first-ever national security policy that aims to strengthen the security apparatus to tackle all the internal and external challenges, as well as ensure the protection of the citizens. The government put economic security at the core to ensure the citizen-centric approach to security.

National security is essential to an environment and geographical space in which people can reside without fear. It is linked to physical as well as economic security, focusing on the provision of better opportunities to the people in a safe and vibrant economic environment. However, most people define national security as military readiness only, even though economic security has great importance in national security. Without a strong market-based economy, a country cannot achieve its national security apparatus.

The economic security revolves around the strong inclusive political system with a robust industrial infrastructure, technology-driven advancements with a strong institutional setup, and an equitable judicious system. It acts as a key factor for promoting growth and private investment in the country.

Since the inception of Pakistan, a comprehensive consensus-based national security policy has never been seriously considered. However, the approval of the National Security Policy (NSP) turned out to be a great step, ensuring the security of all the organs of the government. A strong NSP represents a clear picture of the country as a safe and secure site of investment. It diminishes the uncertainty on the investment returns, thus increasing the foreign direct investment.
