Pakistan's First Artificial Intelligence Lab Under CPEC

Artificial Intelligence (AI), the science of making machines act in rational and intelligent ways, is rapidly making its way into business operations and society. AI is already being adopted in several areas of our lives, with high penetration in financial services followed by e-commerce, healthcare, education, agriculture, and manufacturing.

It is also providing opportunities and contributing to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals. AI is allowing new ways to leapfrog infrastructure gaps and solve pressing development challenges in critical sectors by facilitating private investment to reduce poverty in the country. AI is a key building block in driving sustainable and inclusive economic growth in a country.

The global AI market revenue is forecast to increase from around $5 billion in 2015 to $125 billion in 2025. The unprecedented rise in artificial intelligence and its use in various fields has opened up new doors of opportunities. In Pakistan, this technology is getting a lot of attention as the government is taking significant steps to expand the scope of AI in the country.

In 2018, the Government initiated the President Initiative for Artificial Intelligence & Computing (PIAIC) which aims to reshape Pakistan by revolutionising education, research, and business by adopting the latest, cutting-edge technologies. The government is aiming to make Pakistan a global hub for AI, data science, cloud-native computing, edge computing, blockchain, augmented reality, and the internet of things.

Recently, the Government of Pakistan started its first high-standard artificial intelligence laboratory under CPEC at the National University of Science and Technology (NUST). This project is a joint venture between Pakistan and China. The lab is designed to become the leading hub of innovation, scientific research, knowledge transfer to the local economy, and training in the area of Artificial Intelligence (AI). It aims to facilitate the researchers in the field of AI and help them establish and grow and seek solutions to the indigenous problems through AI.
