The UN E-government Index is a benchmarking tool that provides a comparative assessment of the digital development of UN member countries. The index measures the integration of information and communication technology (ICT) tools and devices in the overall governance processes of the government. The index also evaluates the progress of the individual member country based on local and global perspectives. Under this indexes’ recent report, Pakistan is ranked 153rd on the E-government index amongst the 193 UN member countries.

The UN integrated another sub-index to the overall report earlier for a more holistic valuation of the country’s digital transformation. The digital government development is the sub-index that measures three important indicators, which includes Online Services Index (OSI), Human Capital Index (HCI), and Telecommunication Infrastructure Index (TII).

Pakistan’s progress on the digital transformation has been slow compared to its regional neighbours. However, the country is on the path towards digitising its mainstream governance practices. The government needs to explore potential solutions that can help enhance Pakistan’s EGDI ranking and increase the quality of the citizens’ digital communication and experience with the government.
