Pakistan railways plan to switch to locally manufactured components of locomotives instead of spending public funds on the import of these parts from different countries.

According to the federal minister for railways Azam Swati, the locomotive parts produced in Pakistan are not of sub-standard quality compared to the international standards. Federal Minister for Railways Azam Khan Swati has expressed his commitment to switch over to locally manufactured components of locomotives instead of spending huge foreign exchange on the import of these parts from different countries. The minister also expressed his commitment to tackling all impediments and bottlenecks to make the national railways profitable. In addition, he also revealed that the country aims to bring in more than 400 grounded coaches and wagons on track in the coming few months.

The use of locally made locomotive parts for the railway’s industry can have significant positive outcomes for the transportation sector. Pakistan railways have been a loss-making entity and recently has been unable to provide value to the transportation sector. The primary cause has been the expensive locomotive parts that were imported from different countries. If local cheaper options are available, this will significantly reduce the pressure on foreign exchange reserves and trade deficit. Moreover, the locally made components can put the railways on a path to becoming a profitable entity.
