According to the Ministry of Overseas Pakistani and Human Resource Development, approximately 8.8 million Pakistanis live abroad with a majority of them living in the Middle east. Saudi Arabia has the largest number of Pakistani immigrants. These overseas Pakistanis are an important source of revenue for Pakistan as they send remittances to their families and friends living in Pakistan.
Like most South Asian countries, there are millions of migrants living abroad in the US, UK, Australia, and the Middle East. These overseas Pakistanis and the remittance they send is an important factor in determining the economic policy of the country. Prime Minister Imran Khan has time and again highlighted the importance of Overseas Pakistanis. The Roshan Digital Accounts (RDA) was established to take benefit from the remittances received from overseas Pakistanis.
Recently, Pakistan received a record bringing amount of remittances of $2.8bn. This marks a huge potential for economists, businesses, and investors to create a strategy that will be conducive for economic growth as well as attract more remittances from the large overseas Pakistani diaspora.
