Oceans are an important part of the biosphere yet human actions continue to pollute this vital source of all life on earth. Every year, 380 million tons of plastic waste is dumped into the oceans which harms the ecosystem of over a million marine-based species. Marine biologists and ecosystem experts have shown how human waste makes its way into the oceans and pollutes the food chain at the foundational level.
World Oceans Day is observed by the United Nations to raise awareness and inform the public about the impact of human consumption behavior on the larger ocean life. The day should be used as a platform to develop a global movement for sustainable management of the world’s oceans.
