According to a British High Commission Report, Karachi could be potentially submerged under the sea by 2060 if the current trajectory of sea levels continues to rise. Gradual global warming has led to a record increase in the city’s temperature over the past 74 years. Karachi is Pakistan’s largest trading and commercial capital as it contributes 70% to the national Gross Domestic Product (GDP). With high economic stakes, the provincial and federal governments need to devise a comprehensive plan to protect the city’s landscape and infrastructure from the devastating effects of climate change.
Furthermore, Pakistan is the eighth most vulnerable country to the effects of climate change. Presently, Pakistan is actively participating in the COP26 summit that started on October 31st. Up until now, 26 Pakistani companies have committed to reducing their carbon emissions by half to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.
