The state of education in Pakistan has been a complicated work in progress since the independence of the country. Although there has been an increase in the literacy rate of the country, Pakistan continues to have a fragmented education system.

The Pakistan Social and Living Standards Measurement (PSLM) survey was conducted by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics to collect information from different urban and rural localities in diverse areas of education, health, food availability, and poverty in general. The survey covered 176,000 households across urban and rural areas, which makes it a good measure of the country’s diverse population.

Results of the survey revealed that there has been an increase in the literacy rate in most areas of the country apart from Baluchistan.

The state of education in Pakistan was measured by different literacy-related indicators which included youth education, female literacy, higher education, and children education. The province-wide data derived from the survey shows that Punjab has the highest literacy rate in the country followed by Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Balochistan.

According to the PSLM survey, 32% of children are out of school across the country. The school dropout rate is caused by many different reasons that include economic and financial pressure to find work, unavailability of commute, and lack of proper schooling which monitors school children’s performance.

The government needs to take considerate policy steps towards alleviating the standard of education in Pakistan.
