Illegal housing societies are a menace in Pakistan and its rapidly growing metropolitan cities. Private housing societies and their legality is an issue that has gained traction in media. Recently, when Islamabad’s E-11 sector was flooded during monsoon rains, experts pointed towards an illegal housing society that was built on a nullah responsible for rainwater drainage of the area.

The flooding was responsible for the death of 4 people, including a mother and child. The event pushed CDA to investigate the number of housing societies in the capital operating without a NOC.

CDA estimates that there are 140 illegal housing societies within Islamabad alone. The authority has published a list of authorized societies to inform the public and refrain from investing in illicit societies.
