The pandemic and the subsequent lockdowns were turning points for the increase in the digital uptake of Pakistan’s socio-economic landscape. The lockdowns and the increase in the use of internet services for schools and workplaces provided an unexpected jumpstart for a digital Pakistan.

Globally and in Pakistan, digital solutions for communication, learning, health, finance, and other services were highly endorsed during the pandemic as they reduced the transmission of the virus. The education sector and workplaces also adopted digital communication platforms like Zoom and Google meets.

A majority of daily activities went online, internet usage and penetration increased exponentially during the lockdown. There was a 77% increase in mobile data usage. In addition, the lockdown also increased the number of internet subscribers.

Under the Digital Pakistan policy, the current government aims to make Pakistan a highly efficient economy through the use of a digital ecosystem.
