World Food Day is observed to create awareness, promote and advocate policies to reduce food insecurity, and ensure equitable distribution of resources to increase access to food. The World Food Day commemorations are jointly led by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency and the World Food Programme.

Food insecurity is a global issue with the recent pandemic perpetuating its harmful effects on the global food supply chain. Currently, 8.8% of the world population is under-nourished, which means that millions of people in different countries have a calorie intake of less than 800 kcal per day. In addition, 9% of the population or 697 million people are severely food insecure and 1.9 billion people are moderately food insecure.

On World Food Day 2021, governments, International Governmental Organisations (IGOs), Multinational Companies (MNCs) and international multilateral institutions like the UN and WFP will conduct a series of activities and events for global solidarity in rethinking and reshaping the existing food systems for the people facing food insecurity and malnourishment.
