Tourism is vital for the success of a country’s economy. It boosts the economy’s revenue, generates employment, and develops a nation’s infrastructure. As the World Tourism Organisation states, increased tourism can boost the local economies of developing countries along with cultural discussion and job opportunities.

It also creates a cultural exchange between tourists and local citizens and brings diversity and cultural enrichment to the hosting country. This cultural exchange allows the young entrepreneurs to establish new products and services that will be sustainable for the local and foreign tourists.

In Pakistan, the tourism sector carries huge potential to boost the country’s economy and generate job opportunities. Currently, Pakistan gains $793 billion from its tourism economy and is estimated to derive $1 trillion by 2025 (Dawn,2022).

The tourism industry contributes more than 5.9% to the economy and 6.2% to employment. Pakistan is rich in its tourist destinations and offers a wide range of choices for domestic and foreign travelers, Pakistan’s northern areas are considered the best option for tourism. Furthermore, there are different types of tourism in Pakistan, including archaeological and historical tourism, eco-tourism, adventure tourism, and religious tourism.

Despite so much importance, the tourism sector is not fully developed and needs further investment to tap its potential. However, the sector faces challenges of inadequate infrastructure, poor security situation, inefficient government policies, and untapped hospitality sector. To address these challenges, Pakistan needs foreign investment and efficient government policies to uplift the tourism sector.

Recently, Indonesia has announced to assist Pakistan in promoting its tourism sector. The country will play a vital role in providing economic and trade opportunities to Pakistan. A special capacity-building program will be launched to uplift Pakistan’s tourism sector. This joint venture will improve trade and economic relations between both countries.
