Higher education plays a vital role in a country’s overall development and growth. It builds a modern, knowledgeable, cultured and peaceful society that can lead the country towards a bright future. Currently, there are approximately 180 Higher Educational Institutions (HEIs) in Pakistan, but the courses and curricula are not designed by the standard of higher education of the present day. However, the current government is working hard to improve education for all Pakistani citizens by increasing digital access to information and resources.

Digital education is based on STEAM learning, a learning approach that uses Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics as access points for guiding student inquiry, dialogue, and critical thinking. It positively impacts student achievement and teacher efficacy.

Recently, the government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to improve learning outcomes in middle and high schools in science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics (Steam). For the first time in Pakistan, it will be to develop a framework for university-school engagements that are linked with international best practices with the specific objective to improve Steam learning in the country. This initiative is a part of Steam Pakistan intervention and is financed by the Malala Fund. It will ensure the provision of resources such as qualified faculty members, laboratories, spaces, and the larger academic ecosystem that will directly impact 100,000 students and 5,000 teachers.
