CDA to consider PC-1 of Two Development Projects in Islamabad

Islamabad is a model sustainable city due to its geographical region, infrastructure, and standard of living. Over the years, the capital city has had some major developments, including the construction of the Islamabad Highway (1968), Kashmir Highway (1973), and the M2 Motorway (1998). However, due to overpopulation and rapid urbanisation, the city is facing traffic congestion problems making it difficult for the masses to commute easily. In this context, the concerned authorities have rehabilitated several old roads, including the main double road of Sector I-14, to ease the commuters. Furthermore, the authorities announced plans to start constructing of several new roads to reduce the traffic congestion in the city.

Recently, the Capital Development Authority (CDA) has announced plans to construct Park road and the Bhara Kahu bypass project. The main aim of constructing these roads is to address the traffic issues in the city. Over the years, the issue of road congestion has increased and no such development has been made by the authorities which have brought several problems to the locals. However, it has been believed that developing these two roads will address the traffic congestion problems in the concerned areas and provide relief to the commuters.

Addressing the problems of commuters, the CDA has announced plans to consider the PC-1 of these two projects, the expansion of Park road and the Bhara Kahu Bypass project. The park road caters to residents of several localities, including Bani Gala, Lakhwal, Rawal Town, Shahzad Town, Tamari, Park Enclave, and Chattha Bakhtawar which has been facing traffic congestion due to the mushroom growth of houses and buildings during the last two decades. It is a 7.5km road that needs rehabilitation and widening urgently.

However, the Bhara Kahu Bypass project comprises a 5km road that will start from Murree Road near Quaid-i-Azam University stop and end on Murree Road again, close to Jugi Stop. It will then have a 5km-long flyover, which will end outside of the Bhara Kahu bazaar boundary (towards Murree). It will also have two interchanges and two underpasses. According to CDA, PC-1 for both projects will be approved soon so the construction work can start on an early basis.  In a nutshell, the government officials are committed to providing relief to the commuters and solving the traffic congestion issues in the city.
