Government to allocate Rs 5 Billion flood Victims

Currently, Pakistan is in the midst of climate catastrophe due to torrential rainfalls. Every year, the country experiences monsoon rain spells but this year the situation gets critical and turned into a national disaster. The country received 166.8 mm of rain in August against the average rain of 48 mm, an increase of 241% overall. Sindh and Balochistan have experienced the heaviest rainfall since 1961 with an increase of 784% and 496% respectively.

This year Pakistan has witnessed a serious climate holocaust of the world with extreme weather conditions including extreme heat waves, forest fires, flash floods, multiple glacial-lake outbursts, and now this outrageous monsoon. Climate change is a result of a flawed development model, river encroachment, and a lack of infrastructure to control flowing water and drain water. Right now, more than half of the country is under-water and data expects the re-emergence of another spell in September.

Currently, the unrelenting rains and ensuing floods have left a trail of destruction across the country. Due to the monstrous rains and resulting floods around 1,000 have died and more than 1,200 have been injured with a heavy loss of houses and public infrastructure destruction and livelihoods of thousands. In addition, these disastrous floods have led to a loss of Rs5.5 billion to the nation’s crops including cotton and rice. To cope with this situation, the government needs to devise a climate mitigation plan and provide funds for relief and rehabilitation activities in flood-hit areas.

In this context, the provincial government has set up the Chief Minister Flood Relief Fund and allocated Rs5bn for rehabilitation and resettlement of the flood victims of south Punjab. Under the relief fund, the government will arrange every available resource to help the flood-hit people and also urge philanthropists to come forward to help the people in need.
