The government of Pakistan inaugurated the Green Youth Movement which aims to mitigate the impact of climate change in Pakistan and create 65,000 employment opportunities for the youth. The inauguration and the launch of this green movement are reflective of Pakistan’s commitment to sustainable development.
According to Minister for Planning Asad Umar, Pakistan is one of the vulnerable countries to risks of climate change. The country faces a multitude of challenges because of climate change and there is a dire need for a holistic policy framework that will help in mitigating those effects. The senior leadership of state institutions attended the inauguration of the meeting including Minister of State for Climate Change Zartaj Gul and Special Advisor to the Prime Minister on Youth Affairs Usman Dar amongst many others. In addition, members of the academic and universities attended the inauguration to take part in this session.
In terms of impact, the Green Youth Movement (GYM) is the first of its kind towards integrating and engaging youth in enhancing their capacity building and skills and simultaneously adding to the growth of the country. Besides this, the movement will include 137 universities, ensuring effective integration of the academia. The GYM is a part of the larger Kamyab jawan Programme under which several initiatives have been taken to cater to the employment needs of the youth. The GYM program aims to include technical support via digital training and engagement.
