The Rawalpindi administration and local government authorities plan to build a 500-bed new District Headquarter Hospital (DHQ) hospital in Chakwal district to improve patient accommodation capacity in the healthcare sector of the region. According to Dr Yasmin Rashid, the provincial minister for Specialised Healthcare & Medical Education, the establishment of a DHQ in the Chakwal district is needed due to a low bed-to-patient capacity.

The minister informed that the incumbent government is dedicated to improving the quality of health services in the Rawalpindi district as it has announced the provision of a dialysis facility for the DHQ in Kallar Kahar hospital. Currently, most patients seeking dialysis have to travel to Holy Family Hospital Rawalpindi, which not only overburdens the hospital but also tires the patients travelling from far-flung areas. The establishment of the DHQ in Chakwal will be complemented by a state-of-the-art trauma centre for the population of Chakwal.

The establishment of a large healthcare facility in the areas adjacent to Rawalpindi is important to improve healthcare amongst the local population. Currently, many patients must travel from different parts of the Potohar and northern Punjab regions to Rawalpindi for professional and specialized medical treatment. There is a need to expand the capacity of the system to increase the medical health coverage of the local population.
