Government to Introduce Development projects worth Rs 2.7 bn in Kamoki

To enhance urban development in the country, the Punjab ministry for Local Government and Community Development (LGCD) has introduced several development projects in Kamoki worth Rs 2.7 billion under the Punjab Cities Program. The projects include the development of water supply, sewage, roads, streetlights, renovation of parks and solid waste management in the city. Also, new machinery including tractors, trolleys, dumpers, waste collection vehicles and cranes etc has been provided for cleaning Kamoki city at a cost of Rs 350 million.

Cities are responsible for the bulk of production and consumption globally and are considered the primary engines of economic growth and development.  Cities represent a major sustainable development opportunity. By getting urban development right, cities can create jobs and offer better livelihoods, increase economic growth, improve social inclusion, promote the decoupling of living standards and economic growth from environmental resource use, protect local and regional ecosystems, reduce both urban and rural poverty, and drastically reduce pollution. Sound urban development will accelerate progress towards achieving SDGs, including the end of extreme poverty.

Considering the importance of cities in the country’s economic growth, the government of Pakistan has introduced a development project, the Punjab Cities Program in a joint venture with the World Bank. The main objective of this development program is to strengthen the performance of participating urban local governments in urban management and service delivery. The program primarily focuses on the improvement of urban infrastructure in ways that enhance economic growth and development in participating cities.

Moreover, the development of Kamoki city is one of the focus areas under the Punjab Cities Program. The city is situated 44 km in the North of Lahore and is famous for its quality production of rice. Kamoki is considered one of the most productive cities in the country due to its contribution to the agricultural economy. However, promoting urban development in the city will further boost economic growth and enhance the living standards of the local masses.
