New design for Rawalpindi Kutchery Chowk Approved

The Rawalpindi Development Authority (RDA) recently announced the construction of the Kutchery Chowk underpass. The Kutchery Chowk is located in the main centre of the city along the GT road. It is an intersection of five key urban routes, including Ammar Chowk, Rashid Minhas Road from Marir Chowk, and the Adiala and Tufail roads on the southern side. At the time of the project’s announcement, the project’s estimated cost was Rs 4.879 billion. As per the design, the civil work included a 1km long and two-lane wide underpass linked to several roads of the metropolis city. The main objective of this underpass was to improve economic connectivity and road transport efficiency in the metropolis.

Recently, RDA has developed a revised PC-1 for the Kutchery Road project to make it more preferable for the masses. The new design includes the inclusion of a Y-shaped flyover to facilitate the traffic from Rawat to Saddar, Saddar to Rawat, and Marir Chowk to Rawat. Furthermore, in the new design, there is a vertical clearance of the planned underpass for Iftikhar Janjua Road from 3.6 metres to 5.3 metres toward the airport-bound traffic.

On the contrary, the previous design has only a level-2 six-lane underpass from Saddar to Rawat and from Saddar to the airport, but the new plan also has a flyover. Furthermore, the old design would have catered to only 100,000 vehicles, but in the new plan, there will be a convenient route for 131,500 vehicles per day. With all these changes in the previous design and a 25 per cent increase in the construction material prices, the cost of this project has reached Rs. 6.422 billion.

It is believed that it will help ease the congestion in the city’s central areas after its completion. It will also reduce commuting time and ensure a smooth traffic flow, creating good livability, job creation, and other service or industrial facilities.
